Negotiating contracts is often the worst part of freelance writing. I’m sharing a Contract for a Commissioned Essay that I drafted, in order to potentially help other writers who also face the challenges of working with complex institutions. (I have yet to draft a contract for magazine work, as the short commission schedules and quick turnarounds can make forecasting an editorial process difficult.)
